The first thought that comes to mind when viewer looks at this painting can probably be the subtle melancholy humming beneath the surface of it all. At first this picture seems to be jarring to senses and does not make sense, as if all the scenes have been stacked. Well, that is the particular special characteristic of this picture. Pontormo, an Italian painter’s Mannerist style, truly thrived on tension. Pontormo’s work represents a profound stylistic shift from the calm perspectival regularity to the art of Florentine Resistance. Belonging to the Early Mannerism of Italy, this painting by Pontormo was considered to be the most challenging of all his paintings by his contemporary, Giorgio Vasari.
The central theme of the painting is the biblical story of Joseph as narrated in the Old Testament. The picture specifically integrates four separate moments: Joseph introducing his father Jacob to the Pharaoh of Egypt in the left corner; Joseph on a chariot, hearing a petition from the victims of famine; Joseph with his sons climbing the staircase to visit the dying, Jacob at the top right; and Jacob blessing Joseph’s sons right above the preceding scene.
The story here is fragmented, presented almost like snatches from a dream. The stage set is oddly ill-defined, with sweeping curves and figures of different scales. The little boy with the black hat and basket sitting at the bottom of the stairs of Pharaoh’s palace is said to be the portrait of Pontormo’s apprentice Bronzino. The clothes, expressions and features of all these figures are inspired by northern European painting, as is the large castle and surrounding trees depicted in the background. This painting is a very human rendering of the divine, full of longing and imperfection. This artwork highlights the emotional complexity Pontormo tried to infuse.
