Illyarion Pryanichnikov authored "Jokers. The Gostiny Dvor of Moscow" in 1865, coinciding with his graduation from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. In this painting, he offered a social commentary on the values held by society in 19th century Russia. The subject of the painting depicts a finding within the entrance to the marketplace of the Gostiny Dvor in Moscow. The subject matter of the painting depicts a series of grotesque scenes. One scene depicted is that of a man in the marketplace being ridiculed by a group of wealthy merchants; they are drunk, have caused the old man to be the subject of entertainment for the merchants, danced to a musical rhythm, which reflects the overall lack of respect and dignity shown to the old man by the wealthy. Through this scene, Illyarion Pryanichnikov conveyed that the value of money had a negative effect on society and how the wealthy would treat those of lesser means poorly. Through the actions of the many people observing the events taking place in the marketplace; the reactions of many people who turned away from the entertainment or who continued to watch amusement portrays how poor the overall social mores were at the time. Illyarion Pryanachnikov was an excellent artist and demonstrated this ability through the meticulous detail and emotion contained in his paintings and provided for a very effective presentation through the arrangement of objects within the frame of the painting.
