It is a beautiful portrait of the thirteenth Mughal emperor, Muhammad Shah, who lived in the eighteenth century. The abundance of floral design in the border, background, and the king's attire suggests the characteristic style of Mughal paintings. He wears many jewels and precious stones and holds an emerald with a hookah mouthpiece. The message I derive from the painting is that even though the political power of the Mughals was dwindling, they never failed to showcase their opulence and hedonism.
