The painting was commissioned by Emperor Jahangir between circa 1615 and 1618. It remained in the Mughal Library in Delhi under the later emperor Muhammad Shah until 1739.
In 1739, Nadir Shah of Iran invaded Delhi and took many of the finest paintings and manuscripts from the Mughal Library.In Iran, those paintings were assembled into one or more albums. In the later 19th century, one of those albums was disassembled and its folios were dispersed in Europe. Some were sold through the art market and most ended up in the Russian Imperial Collection. Today, all folios from this group, whether held in St. Petersburg or elsewhere, are collectively known as the St. Petersburg Album. All known pages from this album have been out of Iran for a century, and the Indian paintings were taken from India more than 280 years ago.
By around 1909, this folio appeared on the art market in Tehran. It subsequently entered the collection of dealer Hagop Kevorkian in New York, from whom the Freer Gallery of Art purchased it in 1942. It has remained at the Freer Gallery of Art since that year.
‘Jahangir Preferring a Sufi Shaikh to Kings’ is a Mughal miniature painting made for the court of Emperor Jahangir. Flames of gold radiate from the Emperor's head against a background of a larger, darker gold disc. A slim crescent moon hugs most of the disc's border, creating a fusion between the sun and the moon, symbolizing the ruler's emperorship and divine truth.
Jahangir is shown seated on an elevated, stone-studded platform whose circular form mimics the disc above. The Emperor is the biggest of the five human figures painted, and the disc with his halo is the largest object in this painting. This use of hierarchical proportion, where the most important figure is depicted at the largest scale, is a deliberate compositional device.
Jahangir faces four bearded men of varying ethnicity, who stand in a receiving-line format on a blue carpet embellished with arabesque flower designs and fanciful beast motifs. Almost on par with the Emperor's level stands the Sufi Shaikh, who accepts the gifted book with a hint of a smile. By engaging directly only with the Shaikh, Jahangir makes a statement about his spiritual leanings.
The Sufi Shaikh has been identified as Shaikh Husain of the Indian Sufi Chishti sect. The Shaikh accepts the imperial gift not directly in his hands but in his shawl, thereby avoiding physical contact with a royal personage, which was a cultural taboo.
Below the Shaikh stands an unidentified Ottoman Sultan, dressed in gold-embroidered green clothing and a turban tied in a style that distinguishes him as a foreigner. His depiction draws from a work by Giovanni Bellini. His hands are joined in respectful supplication, and by adopting the manner of greeting of the foreign country in which he is a guest, the Ottoman leader exhibits both respect and humility.
The third figure has been identified as King James I of England. His depiction is based on a portrait by John de Critz, which is believed to have been given to Jahangir by Sir Thomas Roe, the first English Ambassador to the Mughal court. James wears European attire including a plumed hat worn at a tilt, a pink cloak, a fitted shirt with a lace ruff and elaborate jewelry. His uniquely frontal posture and direct gaze make him appear distinctive and perhaps uneasy among the other figures.
Last in line is Bichitr himself, the artist responsible for this miniature, shown wearing an understated yellow jama tied on his left, which indicates that he is a Hindu in service at the Mughal court. He holds up a red-bordered miniature painting as though it were a prized treasure. In this painting within a painting, Bichitr places himself alongside two horses and an elephant, which may have been imperial gifts. He shows himself bowing toward the Emperor in humble gratitude. To underscore his humility, Bichitr puts his signature on the stool over which the Emperor's feet would have to step in order to take his seat.
The hourglass throne carries an inscription written by the young angels at its base: "Allah is great. O Shah may the span of your reign be a thousand years." The start of the second Islamic millennium, the year AH 1000, corresponds to 1591 to 1592 of the Gregorian calendar, during Akbar's reign. The sand is already running through the hourglass in recognition that the second millennium had already begun when Jahangir assumed the throne in 1605, but this is presented as no barrier to his self-styling as the messianic ruler who introduces a new millennial era.
Four putti appear in the painting, borrowed from European iconography. Two crouch at the base of the hourglass writing the Persian inscription. Two are suspended in the air toward the top of the painting. The putto on the left holds a bow with a broken string and a bent arrow, while the one on the right covers his face with his hands. Scholars have debated whether he shields his eyes from the Emperor's radiance or is weeping because time is running out for the Emperor as represented in the slipping sand of the hourglass.
The painting's prevailing blue and yellow harmony is reinforced by the botanical border added in the 18th century by Muhammad Sadiq. A Venetian-style carpet rendered two-dimensionally and busy with incident fills the lower half of the background. The upper half is an ethereal sky blue.
Two Persian couplets are inscribed in cartouches above and below the painting and were added later. They read: "By the grace of God is he truly a king both in form and spirit: the Shah Nur-ud Din Jahangir, son of Padshah Akbar; To all appearances, even as kings and potentates stand in attendance upon him, his gaze falls, inwardly, ever upon holy dervishes."
