Manohar Das, often called Manohar was a known painter at the Mughal court. He worked when Emperor Akbar was in power and also during the time of Emperor Jahangir in the 1500s and early 1600s. He was the son of the painter Basawan. He continued the traditions of the Mughal atelier. Manohar was very good at painting portraits, court scenes and showing emotions. His art mixes styles with visual traditions. This proves how skilled Mughal painters were. The painting called "Jahangir in a Garden" shows an event in a setting. A dressed ruler sits on a raised platform. He is surrounded by courtiers and attendants. The architecture, the flowers and the distant landscape make a palace feel. The people are placed around the ruler. This makes the viewer look at him. It also shows his power and position. The artist uses colors like green, yellow, blue and gold. These colors help separate the people and add depth to the picture. The detailed clothes, turbans, jewelry and faces show the ranks in the court. The rulers clothes are very fancy. They stand out compared to the clothes of the attendants. This difference shows the difference in rank and status. The way the buildings are drawn and the balanced layout give a feeling of order and discipline. It also adds to the importance. The painting shows the focus, on power, court rules and the recording of life. The surrounding Persian calligraphy and decorations suggest that this painting might have been part of an album. In albums painting and calligraphy were combined to show talent. Overall the work shows the technique and beautiful look of painting. Through portraits, details and a good structure the artist shows the court as a place of power, hierarchy and culture. Even though the exact ruler and the event are not clear the painting gives a look into the Mughal court culture.
