The ink painting of bamboo, which is dated 1401 and is kept in the Palace Museum, is an example of the traditional Chinese literati practice of using simple natural subjects to convey more profound philosophical and moral ideas. Bamboo was one of the most important subjects in Chinese painting due to its physical properties: it bends without breaking, stays green throughout the winter, and grows straight. These features caused it to come to symbolise resilience, integrity, humility and the morally developed scholar.
The painting makes almost total use of monochrome ink, showing how Chinese artists were able to achieve variety and depth without the need for colour. By using different concentrations of ink, the artist is able to distinguish between the darker, more solid stems and the lighter, more delicate leaves. The assured and skilled brushwork gives the bamboo a sense of vitality, and the empty spaces beside it are just as important; instead of covering the whole surface, the artist uses patches of blank paper as part of the visual composition, thus producing an impression of air, openness, and movement.
The work also shows the impact of calligraphy on Chinese painting, with each stroke being deliberate and differing in pressure and speed in order to show both texture and energy; the bamboo thus becomes an expression of the artist's mental state as well as a representation of nature, simplicity being a purposeful choice since the fewer elements there are, the more emphasis can be placed on the quality of the brushstroke.
Apart from its aesthetic features, the piece embodies the Confucian idea of self-cultivation and the belief held by the literati that painting could show one's personal character. The bamboo may therefore be seen as a metaphor for a person who stays true to their principles even when under external pressure. By means of a simple composition, expressive ink technique, and symbolic natural imagery, Ink Bamboo turns an ordinary plant into a reflection on character, endurance, and the harmony between humans and nature.
