In Quest Of The Beloved

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Not publicly specified in major museum registries

Samarendranath Gupta's In Quest of the Beloved is an extraordinary piece of art that symbolizes the expressive Bengal School of painting. Here, the artist does a splendid job of portraying a solitary female figure enveloping herself in a dark brown and flowing shawl which is causing her to look even more determined and firm in her endeavors during the dreadful night. The image of the woman looks hemispherical, representing a lot of sorrow and determination taking place in her mind while she moves towards a better future spiritually and romantically. The background of the painting depicts dark, gloomy skies filled with ominous clouds and lightning flashes making the emotional context of the piece evident. It was published as a three-color block print by U. Ray & Sons in Calcutta and is crowned with the representation of traditional Indian painting styles characterized through the use of delicate watercolor wash techniques.
