In Quest of the Beloved' is a watercolour painting by Samarendranath Gupta, who was born in 1887 and died in 1964.This painting was talked about in The Modern Review. The Modern Review was a magazine that started in 1913. The volume 13 of The Modern Review had a label that said it was a watercolor, by Gupta.. The painting is part of the Bengal School. The painting is also associated with the revivalist movement. The painting shows a person searching for the Beloved. Samarendranath Gupta was a student of Abanindranath Tagore. Later in his life he worked at the Mayo School of Arts, in Lahore.. He helped spread the ideas of the Bengal School into a broader institutional context. His artistic practice included watercolour wash and etching. These techniques show the interest in Indian traditions. They also show a move away from the realism that was common in colonial art education. In Quest of the Beloved comes from this phase of Gupta’s career. At that time artists linked to the Bengal School were exploring themes, poetic imagery and atmospheric effects. They were looking for alternatives to European academic naturalism. Gupta’s later work shows an engagement with India’s ancient artistic heritage. This includes his participation in the 1914 expedition to copy the Jogimara cave paintings. It shows his interest in indigenous visual traditions. The painting was published in The Modern Review in 1913. This places it within the growing print culture of art. The publication notes that three colour blocks were made by U. Ray & Sons. This sets the reproduction apart from the watercolour.
Visually the composition is dominated by a figure set within a dark and expansive environment. The raised arm creates an upward movement. It draws the viewer’s attention toward the sky. The sudden appearance of lightning introduces a break in the darkness. Gupta does not describe the landscape with naturalistic detail. Instead he uses washes, restrained outlines and tonal transitions. These techniques create an almost dreamlike setting. His use of chiaroscuro is atmospheric than theatrical. Darkness fills much of the composition. The lightning provides a moment of illumination. Light and shadow are used less to model the figure. They are used more to communicate spiritual intensity. The painting reflects the influence of the Bengal School. It shows Abanindranath Tagore’s emphasis on wash, suggestion, poetic mood and Indian artistic traditions. At the time Gupta’s later study of Ajanta gives important context to his broader revivalist interests. The title In Quest of the Beloved allows the image to be understood on both an spiritual level. The "Beloved" may refer to a human figure. It can also be interpreted as an transcendent presence. The darkness evokes separation and uncertainty. The solitary journey suggests longing. The sudden lightning becomes a moment of revelation. Gupta therefore transforms the landscape into a space. The search, for the Beloved is not simply a journey. It becomes a quest shaped by longing uncertainty and the possibility of spiritual illumination.
