In Bed (A letto) is a 1878 oil painting by Federico Zandomeneghi of a sleeping woman on the bed. The picture was painted in oil on canvas and is attributed to the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Palazzo Pitti, Florence. There are no great themes in Zandomeneghi's works - historical, religious, and mythical; instead, he prefers depicting simple and common domestic life.
The composition of the picture is focused on the figure of the woman lying on the bed. Loose hairstyle and easy pose of the girl suggest that she is sleeping and not aware of being observed. Concerning the composition, there is a significant part of the picture occupied by the bed and, hence, creating an impression of proximity. There is a floral pattern in the background of the sleeping woman, and it creates an opposition to the simplicity of sleep.
The light element in the painting is also one of the most prominent ones. With its help, Zandomeneghi illuminates the female figure and her pale bedclothes, endowing the textures of the materials with softness and volume. The opposition of light and the dark and patterned surroundings directs the viewer's gaze onto the figure. The artist's use of color and light adds to the intimacy of the painting.
In terms of literature and interpretation, the most important element of In Bed is the feeling of privacy that comes from the painting. The observer seems to stand somewhere inside the room, acting as an uninvited witness of a private moment that should not have been disclosed. As described by the Web Gallery of Art, the realism of the scene creates the feeling of entering a private world for the viewer.
In this way, the painting turns a trivial domestic moment into an important topic. Femininity, domestic space, vulnerability, privacy, and the interaction between the observer and the observed become the subject matters. The focus on everyday topics makes the painting related to the larger trend of choosing modern contemporary themes as Impressionists did.
As mentioned, the painter has successfully captured the inner world of the subject using lighting, the loose flowy fabric design and the wall print. The painting looks like a candid photograph stolen from the life of a young woman without being served from a male gaze of voyeurism. There is a warmth in the way the subject has been captured in her vulnerability of being in rest and being unaware of being the subject of a painting.
