Hwamei on Terminalia Branch is a spectacular nature illustration from the late 18th century that was produced for the British East India Company by an unknown Chinese artist. This beautiful watercolor and gouache painting on paper shows an elegant Hwamei bird sitting on a thin terminalia branch, with its mouth wide open as it sings and displays distinctive white eye rings and brown feathers. The surroundings contain broad green leaves and flowering spikes of this plant, which have been painted using a minimalistic style characteristic of the historic Company School movement. The painting even includes some delicate inscriptions in the bottom corner, making it a perfect fusion of Chinese traditional art techniques and Western documentation skills.
