Hanuman, Angada, and Jambavan Climb Mount Mahendra

Artist:Pandit Seu
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Museum Rietberg, Zurich, Switzerland
Location History:Created at the royal Guler court workshop in the Pahari region (present-day Himachal Pradesh, Northern India). The folio remained within royal Pahari collection archives before entering the international art market and being acquired by the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, Switzerland.

While celebrated, this folio from the "Small Guler" Ramayana faces specific art historical criticisms. First is its stark minimalism. The unadorned background—though highlighting the figures—draws critique for lacking the lush, decorative landscapes defining later Pahari masterpieces, leaving the composition feeling somewhat sterile to traditionalists. Second is a stylistic awkwardness. Bridging the raw intensity of the older Basohli school and the fluid naturalism of later generations, the figures retain a lingering stiffness, caught between two contrasting aesthetic eras. Finally, its attribution is heavily contested. Many art historians argue this pivotal series might actually represent the early collaborative efforts of Seu’s sons, Manaku and Nainsukh, rather than the sole work of the founding master himself.
