Location History:Sesshu was based in Suo province, when he made the painting in 1495. The painting travelled to Kyoto with Soen, Sesshu's disciple. Now it is securely located in Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo, Japan. Under inventory number A-282 and was designated a National Treasure on 22 November 1952.

To me Haboku Sansui represents the perception of nature by the human eye. Although this painting of a landscape is done with only a few loose ink strokes the viewer can easily recognize, the mountains, trees and bodies of waters even though they are sketched very briefly. This shows that something does not need to be completely detailed to be understood. I find the empty spaces in the painting allow the viewer to interpret the areas of mist, water ect. Its a very peaceful and open painting.
