Amrita Sher-Gil’s "Three Girls" (1935) marks her transition from European academic realism toward an Indian artistic language. Through restrained poses, downcast gazes, earthy colours, simplified forms, and minimal background, she portrays three Punjabi women as psychologically distinct yet socially constrained. Influenced by Post-Impressionism and Ajanta, the painting conveys melancholy, silence, isolation, and quiet acceptance.
