Gopal Sanyal’s Street Singer (1972) is a haunting, expressionistic depiction of a wandering street musician performing with a red wind instrument, accompanied by another figure who appears to be embracing or supporting him. The painting has an almost dreamlike, folk-art quality. The figures are elongated and compressed together, while their faces are rendered with enormous, staring eyes and mask-like features. Rather than presenting realistic anatomy, Sanyal uses distortion to communicate emotion, vulnerability and psychological intensity. A few striking elements: The musician: His large, dark face and exaggerated eyes dominate the upper part of the composition. The red instrument provides one of the strongest visual accents. The accompanying figure: Positioned beside him, she/he appears almost fused with the singer, creating a sense of intimacy and dependence. The lower figure: A crouching or seated figure/animal-like form occupies the foreground, making the composition feel crowded and theatrical. Colour: Deep greens, browns, ochres, rust-reds and muted oranges create an earthy, nocturnal atmosphere. Eyes: The repeated, oversized eyes are particularly important. They give the figures an uncanny, almost mythological presence. Background: Instead of a conventional street scene, the background becomes a dense field of abstract vegetation, circular forms and organic patterns. This makes the "street" feel more psychological than geographical. So rather than reading it as a literal portrait of a street performer, I'd read Street Singer as a painting about music, companionship, poverty, wandering and the strange inner world of people living at the margins.
