Gopal Sanyal (25 July 1933 – 29 July 2006) was a distinguished modern Indian artist associated with the Bengal school of modern art. Born in Cuttack, Odisha, he later moved to Kolkata, where he studied at the Government College of Art & Craft and earned his Diploma in Fine Arts in 1957. Sanyal was a founding member of the Calcutta Painters group, which played an important role in shaping post-Independence Indian modern art. His works skillfully blended traditional Indian artistic values with modernist experimentation. He became especially known for his expressive drawings and paintings featuring birds, animals, rural life, musicians, and ordinary people. His strong understanding of anatomy, combined with stylized forms and vibrant colours, gave his artworks a unique visual identity. Throughout his career, he received several prestigious awards, and his works became part of major public and private collections in India and abroad.
