Xu Daoning’s Fishermen’s Evening Song shows a peaceful and atmospheric view of the fishermen coming home at dusk. In the painting there is a sense of harmony between human life and the natural world, which is a main theme in the landscape paintings of the Northern Song period. The massive mountains take up the majority of the picture, and the meandering rivers and distant trails lead the eye across the vast landscape. The small figures of the fishermen and their boats highlight how much larger nature is. Instead of showing dramatic scenes, Xu Daoning achieves a feeling of stillness and reflection through the use of misty distances, multiple layers of mountains, and gentle differences in tone. The fact that it is evening implies that a day's work is finished and the fishermen are returning to their domestic lives, giving the scene a mild sense of rhythm and continuity. The painting thus combines careful observation of nature with poetic imagination, and turns an ordinary rural activity into a meditation on simplicity, balance, and the position of humanity within the vastness of the natural world.
The painting draws attention to the overwhelming scale of nature and the quiet places of human life. The fishermen are swallowed by the mountains and the water bodies, it doesn't depict insignificant but rather coexistence of human being and nature. It looks like that the fishermen has found solace in the scene.
