Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God is a masterpiece of religious art from the 17th century made by Gury Nikitin using Tempera on a Wooden panel. This Painting is imprtant, as it represents the end of the period of traditional Russian Orthodox iconography. The work was painted by the well-known artist Gury Nikitin and his special Kostroma artel, including a very famous image of Mother of God with the Baby Jesus in her arms, being an example of the Eleusa (Mother of God of Tenderness) icon type. What makes the artwork really special is the narrative content the image is surrounded with. Нikitin works with the holy image and adds to its sides some very interesting scenes of events happening around the icon (otherwise, they are normally called ‘kleimos,’). With the help of these, Nikitin tells and illustrates the stories connected with the history of the holy icon and its wonderful deeds, including the discovery of the icon and the miracle of healing of the paralyzed Ivan Pleshkov. Instead of using the arrangement of images in a static way, Nikitin creates energy in his paintings with the help of the rhythmic lines and active combination of different figures, making the flat image seem like a real story.
