A family portrait in Anguissola’s interpretation is not just a depiction of relatives, but a chamber story about the dignity of the family and the distribution of roles within it. Minerva, Amilcare and Asdrubal are shown as people who are connected by a common destiny: in their poses and gestures one can read restraint, inner composure and a sense of responsibility. Faces usually convey character through subtle differences: in some places there is more severity, in others there is softness or concentration. Sofonisba Anguissola acts as the central link between those portrayed: her compositional place (and the image itself) emphasize that she is not a “background”, but a full participant in the design. It seems to connect the viewer with the family world, making it more “psychological”: not only who these people are, but also how they perceive themselves. Overall, the work creates an impression of peaceful dignity: the light and calm brushwork maintain an atmosphere of family closeness, and the stable order of the figures makes the image solemn and theatrical, but at the same time human.
