Equestrian Portrait of Nadir Shah Afshar possibly by Muhammad Ali ibn Abd al-Bayg ibn Ali Quli Jabbadar is a striking example of early 18th century Persian court portraiture. The painting presents Nadir Shah Afshar, the powerful Iranian ruler, mounted on a richly decorated horse. His elevated position and formal bearing emphasize his authority, military power, and royal status. The composition is dominated by the horse and rider, shown in profile against a relatively restrained background. Nadir Shah wears elaborate courtly and military costume, with carefully rendered textiles, ornaments, and weapons. The horse's richly patterned harness and saddle further reinforce the luxurious character of the image. The artist uses fine linear detailing, controlled colour, and decorative patterning, characteristic of manuscript painting traditions. The profile pose and emphasis on the ruler's costume create a sense of official representation rather than psychological portraiture. At the same time, the horse introduces movement and a military dimension, presenting Nadir Shah not merely as a monarch but as a victorious warrior and commander. The work therefore combines royal portraiture, equestrian symbolism, and Persianate court aesthetics, reflecting the close artistic connections between Iranian and Mughal visual traditions.
