Having worked under Mughal emperors including Farrukhsiyar and Muhammad Shah, Chitarman II, also known as Kalyan Das, was an important Mughal court painter known for his refined portraiture and precision. In his painting "Emperor Farrukhsiyar Bestows a Jewel on a Nobleman” he depicts an Emperor Farrukhsiyar seated on a sumptuous throne presenting a jewel to a nobleman standing before him. The King appears calm and imperious while bestowing the jewel, in contrast to the submissive nobleman who bows down before the king, this underscores the emperor’s position of authority.
