Three Women in Church (Die drei Frauen in der Kirche) is a realist oil painting by German artist Wilhelm Leibl (1844–1900). Created between 1878 and 1882, the painting shows three women from different generations sitting together in a wooden pew inside the village church at Berbling, near Bad Aibling in Bavaria. Rather than portraying wealthy or idealised figures, Leibl focused on ordinary rural people, reflecting his interest in the everyday lives of the Bavarian countryside. The painting is now part of the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
What makes the painting particularly striking is its quiet and realistic atmosphere. The three women appear absorbed in prayer and reading, dressed in traditional rural clothing. Their serious expressions, detailed faces, clothing and gestures make them feel like real individuals rather than carefully idealised subjects. Leibl had moved away from Munich and increasingly lived among rural communities, choosing to observe and paint people in their natural surroundings. The three women in this painting were local residents who served as models, and Leibl worked directly inside the church. His close attention to small details is characteristic of his highly realistic style, sometimes described as his “Holbein manner.”
The creation of the painting was not easy. Leibl began working on it in 1878, but the death of the church pastor soon created a problem when his successor refused to allow the artist to continue painting inside the church. The situation was eventually resolved through the intervention of Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria. Leibl also faced technical difficulties because the church's dim interior made it challenging to capture the women's faces, clothing and other details. His attempts to portray the figures accurately also created some problems with perspective, most noticeably in their disproportionately large hands.
Taking around three and a half to four years to complete, Three Women in Church became one of Leibl's most important works and a high point of his career. What I find most interesting about the painting is how Leibl turns an ordinary moment of village life into something meaningful. There is no dramatic event taking place; instead, the painting captures the simplicity, faith and quiet routine of rural life. Through its honest portrayal of three generations of women, Leibl gives us a glimpse into 19th-century German peasant society while demonstrating the power of realism to make an everyday moment worth remembering.
A very neutral and subtle art by him has been portrayed. The ordinary depicting way of life and rural lifestyle has been his tool style. And with the oil pastel the form of simple, quite and regular picture can be seen. Through its honest portrayal of three generations of women, Leibl gives us a glimpse into 19th-century German peasant society while demonstrating the power of realism to make an everyday moment worth remembering. His attempts to portray the figures accurately also created some problems with perspective, most noticeably in their disproportionately large hands.
