Although less well known than other, more famous works of art, Federico Barocci's Deposition is probably one of the most spectacular paintings in the history of art. Through its splendid, vivid, and luminous colours, together with the dynamism of the figures, whose garments are swept by the wind, this altarpiece conveys a moment of extraordinary pathos: in the upper register, developed vertically, a multitude of figures prepares to lower Christ's body from the Cross, with a very young Saint John embracing Christ's feet and the wind stirring the garments of the men; in the lower register, developed horizontally, the fainting of the Virgin is depicted, as the holy women rush towards her in alarm.
The figure of Christ unquestionably dominates the entire composition: his body is that of a healthy young man, graceful but not fragile, almost marble-like and radiant; there is blood upon his forehead, a small wound beneath his side, while his hands and feet bear the marks of the Crucifixion. The suffering inflicted upon his body has not disfigured his skin, which remains relaxed and serene; one arm is still attached to the Cross, while the other falls gently beside his body. The light is concentrated upon him, yet it does not come from outside the scene: it seems to emanate from within the painting itself, created through colours that illuminate his entire figure, leaving only the white cloth covering his nakedness in shadow. Christ rests in silence after his inevitable journey through life, while chaos reigns around him: no one is still, no face is calm, and every figure is occupied, anxious, and in motion.

The composition highlights Christ's divine serenity despite the violence he has experienced by contrasting his serene, radiant body with the frantic grief of those around him.
