Guido Reni was an Italian Baroque painter who primarily painted religious woks and time to time mythological works. We are looking at one of Reni’s most famous paintings: David with the Head of Goliath. This ancient story has been repeated numerous times throughout history. It conveys a strong message of truth — that a larger or stronger opponent does not guarantee victory or overall outcome. After David slays Goliath with Goliath’s own weapon, the Philistines fled in panic when they saw their champion fall. However, Guido Reni painted after the battle between David and Goliath had concluded. His David is quiet, calm, relaxed, and not celebrating or glorying. He is leaning on a large stone column with his right elbow, looking like someone who has just gone through the greatest/some life-changing experience but had not yet completely processed it. The background of the painting is almost totally black, which focuses the viewer’s attention on the illuminated torso of David and the severed head of Goliath, located on the ground in front of David. The contrast of both objects of the painting is strong but not dramatic. The contrast appears to be deliberate as opposed to the dramatic effects of other works by Reni. David is dressed simply he has an animal skin draped over one shoulder, much like that of a shepherd. He has a leather sling still in his hand, appearing absentmindedly at this moment. To his lower left, the sword belonging to Goliath is discarded and heavy upon the ground; this serves as an ironic and almost comical representation for David’s victory over Goliath. The most interesting part of the painting, however, is what Reni purposely omitted from the image. There are no glorious poses; no hands raised in glory. Instead, the only real expression exhibited by David is one of quiet reflection after having accomplished what needed to be done. Consequently, David does not have a heroic look about him at this point; rather, he looks like an ordinary person just standing patiently after performing a great act of valor.
