Bishandas also known as Bishan Das or Bishn Das was one of the most prominent painters in the court of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Very little is known about his personal life, except that he was a Hindu painter in the imperial painting workshop of the emperor. Mainly known for his portrait painting skills, it is said that he had unequal match in capturing the realistic apperance of his models, which was keenly praised by Jahangir as he himself was a connoseuir of realistic and accurate portraits. Bishandas was often sent on diplomatic projets by Jahangir to paint portraits of notable historical figures. The given painting is one such example where the portrait of of Suraj Singh Rathore, Raja of Marwar had been painted by Bishandas.Raja Suraj Singh was one of the most prominent rulers of Marwar now known as Jodhpur, as well as the brother in law of emperor Jahangir. The portrait has not only artistic significance but also holds an important record of history. This painting serves as an important source of knowledge about the political, social and diplomatic relations among the Rajputs and the Mughals. Later emperor Shah Jahan included this painting among his perosnal family record as well a testament to royal and sophisticated visual art. Bishandas puts life into the painting by adding a weary expression to Suraj Singh's face rather than making him a staunch and rigid elite figure. Bishandas's fine brush strokes have masterfully depicted the translucent and fine muslin fabrics, showcasing the refined fine clothes of that era.
