Christ Consoled by the Angels

“Christ Consoled by the Angels” is a painting depicting the moment following Christ’s flagellation, where he was tied to a pillar and beaten by Roman soldiers on the orders of Pontius Pilate, before being crucified. A scene that is rarely depicted compared to depictions of the punishment itself. At the center of the composition, an archangel supports the weakened body of Jesus, whose back becomes the main visual point. In addition, the column behind Christ recalls the place where he was flogged Pilate, while a small light shows through the darkness of the background and draws the viewer’s gaze towards the central figure, reinforcing the idea of hope in complicated times. The symbolism of the work is created by the presence of the angels surrounding Christ. In the painting, some angels carefully collect his blood and place it in vases, which can be interpreted as a clear reference to the Eucharist and the redemptive sacrifice. The artists choice of the use of a warm palette for the painting softens the harshness of the scene, while the copper support allows for a detailed finish that intensifies the work’s contemplative character. Juan Patricio Morlete Ruiz was one of the most renowned painters in New Spain during the second half of the 18th century. Born of San Miguel de Allende, he was a student of José de Ibarra and helped found the Academy of Painting in 1753. His work is easily recognized by the influence of the New Spanish Baroque style, characterized by the use of refined brushwork, and a deep devotional intent that made him a prominent and leading figure in religious painting of his time.
