This artwork is rooted in storytelling where the central figure is that of an animal (Chagol, meaning goat), but with a unique sense of personality. It's not randomly placed in the landscape but embodies a conscious creative choice, driven by Abanindranath Tagore's vision of a rocky Himalayan terrain as backdrop. Instead of treating the animal and the mountains separately while painting, he blends them together and his brushwork is moody and atmospheric to complement this approach. The textured environment grounds the painting and keeps it earthy, earnest and dignified. The real narrative depth of life is often found in the fragility of unassuming living beings of nature.
