The canvas belongs to the casta genre, a set of paintings that sorted colonial New Spain's mixed-race population into a graded hierarchy of lineages. This work's title pairs two parentage formulas from that system: a cambujo man with an Indigenous woman, and a second couple whose offspring is labelled by the title's later phrase. Each figure is presented as a type, dressed and posed to signal social rank, and the image asks the viewer to read the body, clothing, and setting as evidence of a family line. Casta paintings were made largely by elite artists for elite patrons, and they were far from neutral records. Scholars note that the genre pictured a racial order as if it were natural, though the categories were more fluid in practice. The Museo de América's own record and the wider literature treat such images as tools of social classification, not transparent documents of daily life. The sheer number of categories, and the pride of place given to Spanish descent, make the painting an argument about who belonged where. Berrueco's version also carries the genre's usual stillness. Figures stand framed against a plain or landscape backdrop, and nothing in the scene interrupts the taxonomy. That calm is what makes it unsettling: a family portrait that is simultaneously an instruction manual for social hierarchy.
