Capriccio with the Campidoglio

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: National Gallery of Parma, Italy

Bellotto's ‘Capriccio with the Campidoglio’ does not exist as an isolated narrative. It was painted directly alongside a matching pendant painting, a sister canvas designed to hang opposite it on a gallery wall to balance light and shadow. The two works have remained an unbroken pair for centuries; they were acquired together by Count Stefano Sanvitale of Parma in 1835 and continue to hang side-by-side inside the Galleria Nazionale di Parma.
