Calligraphy on Taj Mahal (circa. 1638-1648)

Abdul Haq (Shirazi), later bestowed with the royal title Amanat Khan by Emperor Shah Jahan, was the mastermind behind the iconic calligraphy adorning the Taj Mahal. While architects shaped the monument’s physical form, Abdul Haq provided its spiritual soul, turning white marble and red sandstone into a canvas of divine communication.His contribution was twofold: structural curation and flawless execution. Rather than selecting random verses, Abdul Haq carefully curated passages from the Quran that created a deliberate spiritual journey. A visitor entering the complex is greeted at the Great Gate with verses from Surah Al-Fajr, inviting the righteous into Paradise. As one approaches the central mausoleum, the inscriptions shift toward themes of divine mercy, cosmic power, and ultimate judgment, reflecting the funerary nature of the monument.Executing this vision required extraordinary engineering skill. Abdul Haq did not use paint; instead, he pioneered a permanent stone inlay technique. He meticulously carved out the marble faces and inlaid thousands of precisely shaped slices of black marble and dark jasper to form the script. To counter perspective distortion, he subtly increased the size of the letters as they climbed higher up the walls. This brilliant optical illusion ensures that a viewer standing on the ground sees a perfectly uniform script from top to bottom.In Mughal architecture, artists rarely received public credit, but Abdul Haq’s genius earned him an exceptional privilege. Shah Jahan permitted him to sign his work inside the central dome. His humble inscription reads, "Written by the insignificant being, Amanat Khan Shirazi," dated 1048 AH (1638 CE). Through this signature and his timeless artistry, Abdul Haq transformed the Taj Mahal from a grand palace of grief into one of the world's greatest masterpieces of Islamic calligraphy.
