Butterfly and Chinese Wisteria Flowers

Artist:Xu Xi
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Shanghai Museum in China

The painting's effect comes from its precision. The wisteria racemes hang in pale lavender and white clusters, each blossom and stalk outlined with fine, controlled brushwork and then coloured, a technique that makes the flowers look almost botanically exact. The leaves in greyish greens and ochres are drawn with the same care, and the branches curl across the silk in an elegant, rhythmic line. The butterfly, painted in deep indigo with white spots, is the only dark note, placed at the left so that it draws the eye across the composition. In Chinese symbolism, wisteria suggests longevity and lasting bonds, and butterflies often signify love and marital fidelity, so the pairing reads as a wish for enduring affection. The restraint of the palette and the quiet balance of flower and insect make the image feel calm and contemplative, as if the painter were capturing a single moment in a garden.
