Burning of the Frigate Philadelphia in the Harbor of Tripoli is a painting by American marine artist Edward Moran. It depicts the daring February 16, 1804 raid during the First Barbary War. Moran apprenticed under the Philadelphia marine painter James Hamilton in the early 1850s, and Hamilton's taste for stormy skies and dramatic light stayed with him for the rest of his career and is even evident in this artwork. Painted in 1897, this painting belongs to a cycle of thirteen large paintings Moran devoted to episodes in American naval history, a project carried out mostly between 1891 and 1898. This was late in his career, which was built otherwise on more conventional marine views. The scene shown here is of the night of the raid. Lieutenant Stephen Decatur led a party of volunteers into Tripoli harbor aboard the disguised ketch Intrepid. USS Philadelphia had run aground off Tripoli the previous October and captured along with its crew. Washington treated this loss as a serious humiliation. Decatur's men boarded the frigate under cover of darkness, set it ablaze and escaped in the Intrepid without a single casualty among them. Moran places that escaping ketch- small in the foreground, with the column of fire consuming the frigate behind dwarfing it. Since Moran painting this in 1897, nearly a century after the event, he relied on written accounts rather than direct observation. Writers on the series have pointed out that these history paintings were pitched to a late-nineteenth-century public appetite for sensational, patriotic subjects. Firelight and its reflection across dark water dominate the composition, a device carried over from Moran's earlier storm-at-sea pictures. The painting hangs today in the Annapolis collection alongside other canvases from the same series, still used to illustrate the First Barbary War for museum visitors.
