The painting depicting a zebra, also identified as Equus quagga burchelli, was presented to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir by Mir Jafar who had acquired the animal from Turks travelling to the Mughal court from Ethiopia. Fascinated by this 'unusual' creature, Jahangir recorded its arrival in his memoirs and noted that its likeness was by Nadir- ul- Asri, Ustad Mansur who was one of the most accomplished naturalistic painters of the Mughal court. The inscription on the painting, written in Persian language, states that the animal was a 'mule' brought from Ethiopia by the Turks accompanying Mir Jafar, and dates the work to 1030 AH which is 1620-21, during the sixteenth regnal year of Jahangir.
The animal was presented to Jahangir during the Nowruz celebrations in March 1621. The emperor is known to have been intrigued by the appearance of this animal that he carefully examined it to determine whether it was genuinely a striped animal or merely oainted with stripes. Jahangir satisfied with the result decided to gift it to Shah Abbas of Iran with whom he shared and exchanged rare objects. The inscription explicitly provides Mansur's encounter with it. The painting was most likely illustrated in the Jahangirnama, however no illustrated manuscript of the memoirs have survived.
Ustad Mansur renowned for his remarkable ability to capture animals and plants with extraordinary precision had already established himself as a leading naturalistic artist during the reign of Akbar. His skill can also be seen in the Akbarnama at the Victoria and Albert Museum, particularly in a hunting scene around 1590-95. The painting tries to capture not only the animal, but the emperor's deep desire in the natural world.
'Burchell's Zebra' or 'Equus Quagga Burchelli' is a painting from the collection of the Mughal emperor, Jahangir. The painting depicts the emperor's pet Zebra, gifted to him by Mir Ja'far, who in turn, had procured the animal from travelling Turks. The Emperor was astonished and bewildered by the sight of the animal, and thought it was a horse with stripes painted on it at first. Later on, the animal was gifted to Shah Abbas of Iran, with whom Emperor Jahangir often exchanged exotic presents. We can infer that this painting was an illustration for his memoirs, as there's no clear mention of having this painting ordered anywhere. After Jahangir's reign, this painting was kept by Emperor Shah Jahan, and was later added to the Royal Album of Paintings and Calligraphies. The painting, to this day, serves as a symbol of Emperor Jahangir's awe of nature, and love of the exotic.
