The oil on canvas, Lane's Brace's Rock, Eastern Point, Gloucester, circa 1864- is a depiction of a serene location with Brace's Rock being located at the center of the scene. Brace's Rock is a famous land form in Brace's cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The painting is highly praised in terms of its use of light, mood, and structure to create a sense of calmness. The picture is characterized by an organized landscape which highlights the calm, rocky environment. This rock, Brace's, takes up position in the water, amid numerous surrounding rocky formations. Coloring in this particular rock, as in red, sets it off from the rocks surrounding, a brownish gray. In addition, shown on the far side, are some distant ships including what can be interpreted as a shipwreck; it is seen as being a source for human interaction, yet the peace and serene environment is maintained for the rest of the picture. The painting takes on a greater importance owing to Lane's Brace's Rock series, which is among the last oil works that were dated. The calm water, waning light, and destroyed trunk have been interpreted by experts to mean the inevitability of death. On the other hand, the canvas remains true to a specific geography of Gloucester. By employing the restrained composition, bright atmosphere, and softly intense emotions, Lane transcends a simple coastal landscape into contemplation about nature, time, and human hypocrisy.
