Boscaiole con fascine (Female Woodcutters with Faggots) is a work of rural landscape painting by Italian painter Cristiano Banti. It was painted between 1878 and 1884. In the picture, women are depicted doing physical labor in the countryside; they carry the wood or branches on their back. Here, Banti shows the figures of rural workers in their importance, not as some anonymous characters in the background of the painting. Thus, his work shows the connection between the labor of humans in the countryside and the Tuscan landscape around them. The painting has a horizontal organization of the composition, making the observer able to see both people in it and the nature surrounding them. Women depicted here seem to be occupied with usual physical activities, which do not require much of a dramatic gesture. There is no idealization of the subject by means of historical or mythological themes. The depiction of the landscape in the painting has been rendered with great care towards the lighting, colors and overall ambiance. The landscape takes up a considerable amount of space in the painting, while the figures add the human element to the picture and help convey perspective. Banti's use of tone and relatively loose brushstrokes can be attributed to his affiliation with the Macchiaioli, which were groups of nineteenth century Italian painters who painted nature as it was observed and opposed the academic style of painting. Therefore, the painting is important not only for its illustration of the Tuscan rural life but also for being a painting that illustrates the artistic style of Banti at the time.
