Blue Iris

Blue Iris created by Muhammad Zaman around 1663-64 is a masterpiece because at the time where court painting and manuscripts were the norm he painted this vibrant blue iris flower. This artwork reflects a direct intersection with European natural history illustrations and floral paintings coming into Isfahan during that time through trade routes. Safavid artists adapted these style pairing them with the traditional Persian illuminated gold-flecked borders. Art historians emphasise that traditional Persian painting prioritized flat planes of saturated colour, decorative two-dimensional patterns and generalized flora. In contrast, Zaman’s Blue Iris utilizes European-derived modeling techniques. Rather than blindly copying European engravings Zaman's Blue Iris symbolised how Safavid master painters appropriated Western empirical observation valuing individual flora and fauna as worthy subjects of high art and adapted them into elite album called muraqqa in Persia.
