Blue Iris

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: Brooklyn Museum, New York

Blue Iris by Muhammad Zaman is a refined example of the Mughal interest in the close observation and elegant representation of flora. The painting focuses on the iris flower, presenting its delicate petals, slender stem, and carefully rendered botanical details against a relatively restrained background. The work demonstrates Zaman’s combination of naturalistic observation and decorative refinement. The blue-violet petals are emphasized through subtle tonal modelling, while the fine linework gives the plant a precise, almost scientific character. At the same time, the graceful arrangement and controlled composition retain the aesthetic elegance associated with Persianate and Mughal painting.
