Birds on a Tree above Cataract is a Chinese album leaf painting, created with ink and colours on silk. The artist, Li Di is from Heyang (current day Meng County, Henan Province), and served as a court painter during China’s Southern Song dynasty. In his painting Birds on a Tree above a Cataract, Li Di depicts two birds sitting together on a cypress tree branch, perched side-by-side. Stretching from bottom left to top right, the tree branch forms a diagonal composition for the painting, and with the birds sitting at the top of said branch, creates a sense of tension. For painting this artwork, he used the style of Gongbi, a Chinese painting method which literally means “meticulous brush”. Using controlled and detailed outlines, sometimes combined with ink washing, this technique is known for its neatness and delicateness. With its use of the Gongbi style, this painting is very detailed, with every leaf and textural lines on the tree being drawn with precision. In its Gongbi linework, a variety of textures is created in Li’s painting, such as the dotted brushwork of the leaves, the smooth lines for the birds, and the rougher-looking lines for the texture of the tree branches and the rock that the tree grows on. With the artist being known for creating realistic representations from life, this artwork is a showcase of his technical proficiency in ink painting.

Although every leaf, branch, and feather is rendered with extraordinary care, the scene never feels rigid; instead, it conveys a quiet harmony between the birds and their natural surroundings. The diagonal composition subtly guides the viewer's eye upward, creating a sense of movement while preserving the overall serenity of the landscape. To me, the artwork reflects the idea that careful observation of nature can reveal both its beauty and its underlying sense of order, transforming a simple moment into one of quiet contemplation.
