Birds and Flowers of the Four Seasons: Autumn and Winter

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Museum’s Freer Gallery of Art Collection.
Location History:The painting was produced in Japan during the late 15th to early 16th century, within the Muromachi period. The precise place of production is not documented and no specific city or workshop can be securely identified. It is currently part of Freer Gallery of Art Collection at the National Museum of Asian Art, Simthsonian Institution Washington D.C. The painting was acquired through the Charles Lang Freer Endowment. The provenance history is still underway by the museum.

The screen shows autumn and winter as one quiet scene, where cranes, bamboo and a twisted old tree stand for time passing slowly. The pale colors and the flat layout make it feel calm instead of dramatic, and the touches of red and ochre bring a little warmth to the cold season. It shows how Japanese painters took Chinese ink traditions and turned them into their own way of seeing nature.
