Envisioned and painted directly onto the ceiling panels of the boys' hostel room at Santiniketan during his tenure as a foundational faculty member under Rabindranath Tagore. The mural remains an immovable architectural monument within the university campus, celebrated as a seminal national prototype for structural public wall art in modern India.
It is said in Sanskrit shlokas - "Just as the radiant crest adorns the head of a peacock, so does the vivid essence of this local landscape gloriously illuminate every coordinate of this composition."
This revolutionary ceiling painting represents a foundational pinnacle of Indian Contextual Modernism, consciously breaking away from the mythological symbolism of the early Bengal School to embrace the poetic rhythm of daily life.
The artist masterfully utilized the physical architecture of the ceiling, turning the horizontal expanse into a fluid, scroll-like panoramic narrative that forces the observer to alter their physical viewing mode by looking upward. The composition is organically wrapped around a central village pond (pukur), unfolding into an open-ended sanctuary where humans, wandering cattle, native birds, and dry palm trees coexist in absolute environmental harmony.
Having suffered from congenital visual impairment since childhood, the artist did not seek to render static optical realism; instead, he translated the intrinsic structural feel and textures of the Santhal landscape from pure memory and internal intuition. The painting balances calligraphic ink outlines inspired by Far Eastern wash techniques with flat spatial planes borrowed from Western modernism, creating an exceptional visual synthesis.
