This is a Mughal miniature painting from the Akbarnama (autobiography of Akbar), depicting the defeat of Baz Bahadur of Malwa by Mughal forces under Adham Khan in 1561. Baz Bahadur was the the last independent ruler of the Malwa Sultanate, was defeated by the Mughal army during Akbar’s expansion into central India. The episode became associated with the famous story of Baz Bahadur and Rupmati, a Hindu singer and his beloved. The artwork is attributed to the Mughal artist Jagan, while the painted details were completed by Banwali. The painting depicts the battle between the forces of Baz Bahadur and the Mughals. In the lower and central sections, the soldiers are shown engaged in an intense combat. The richly patterned armour, shields, swords, spears and the colourful garments provide a vivid imagery. Within the fort, a group of women and attendants appear on the terrace, watching the events below. These figures are said to represent Rupmati and the women of Baz Bahadur’s household. The painting presents the Mughal conquest as an assertion of imperial power. The composed presence of the women watching from the fort contrasts with the violence of the battlefield and symbolises the vulnerability of the royal household. The painting also shows how in Mughal historical paintings military campaigns were depicted to reinforce and strengthen the political legitimacy of the rulers. The emphasis remains on defeat of Baz Bahadur, and the incorporation of Malwa into Akbar’s expanding empire.
The painting shows the scenes of a battlefield as well as the royal household during the war in a composed and graceful manner. The stylized portions of trees is a very significant symbol of Mughal miniature painting.
