Battle Scene with Boats on the Ganges

Artist:Tulsi
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom
Location History:Created in the imperial Mughal workshop in Agra/Lahore during the late 16th century, this folio remained within the imperial Mughal royal library through the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. During the 19th century, it was acquired in India by Major General John Clarke while serving as Commissioner of Oudh between 1858 and 1862. In 1896, the manuscript page was purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum from Major General Clarke's widow, Frances Clarke.

This miniature is made in such a way that a big event from Mughal history serves as a lesson to future kings and queens who can resist Emperor Akbar. The artists depict the confusion so well, as the rebellious governor is caught by the Emperor’s soldiers right at the Ganges banks. This mix-up and the murky-black water, and the violence and fury of the soldier’s fight give the viewer an inevitable feeling that all those who dare to resist Emperor Akbar are going to be punished as cruelly as possible.
