Bamboo and Rocks by the Xiao and Xiang Rivers (潇湘竹石图)

Artist:Su Shi
Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: National Art Museum of China (中国美术馆), Beijing
Location History:The painting was created around 1084 AD by Su Shi, who gave it as a gift to his friend Sun Jue while living in exile in Huangzhou. Between 1334 and 1561, the scroll passed through the hands of various private collectors during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, who added twenty-six colophons totaling more than 3,000 characters, beginning with the collector Yang Yuanxiang in 1334. In the early twentieth century, during the Beiyang government era, the painting was kept at an antique shop in Beijing before being purchased by the collector Bai Jianfu. In 1961, Bai sold the scroll to the journalist and art collector Deng Tuo, who researched and confirmed it as a genuine work by Su Shi. In 1964, Deng donated the painting, along with more than 140 other ancient Chinese paintings, to the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, where it remains part of the permanent collection to this day.

Su Shi’s Bamboo and Rocks by the Xiao and Xiang Rivers presents bamboo and rocks in a simple but expressive natural setting. The bamboo bends gently while the rocks appear strong and stable, creating a contrast between flexibility and strength. The painting reflects the traditional Chinese idea that nature expresses human character and emotions. Bamboo, which remains green and bends without breaking, represents resilience, integrity, and humility, while the rocks suggest firmness and endurance. The empty space creates a peaceful atmosphere and allows the viewer to imagine the wider landscape. The painting conveys a message of inner strength, simplicity, harmony with nature, and moral perseverance.
