Bairam Khan's widow and child are escorted to Ahmedabad

Artist:Mukund
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Great Britain
Location History:This painting passed through the Mughal royal library from Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, sealed 1668-69) and later the Nawab of Rampur's collection (seals 1766-1794), before being acquired in India by Major General John Clarke (Commissioner of Oudh, 1858–1862) and finally purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1896 from his widow, where it remains today.

This illustration from the Akbarnama (biography of emperor Akbar) is attributed to artist Mukund and depicts the events after Bairam Khan was assassinated in 1561. He was a close aide of emperor Akbar's father Humayun and also a sort of guide figure to Akbar since he ascended the throne at the age of thirteen. Muhammad Amin Diwan is depicted escorting the widow of Bairam Khan and their son Abdur Rahim to Ahmadabad. It is said that on his way to Mecca following orders from Akbar after he had carried out a rebellion, Bairam Khan was assassinated by an Afghan seeking revenge against him. Later, Abdul Rahim became one of the most renowned ministers in Akbar's court. Through this depiction, Mukund has thus visually represented a significant even that occured during the reign of emperor Akbar.
