Artist:Bhimjiv
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: British Library, London, United Kingdom
Location History:From the illustrated Baburnama, manuscript Or. 3714, Vol. 1, fol. 35v; held in the British Library collection.

This Mughal miniature painting is from around the year 1590, showing a significant historical occurrence referred to in the Baburnama. The event illustrates the moment when Mohammed Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, receives the submission of Baqi Chaghaniani in a huge military camp near the river Oxus. This miniature was painted by Bhim Gujarati, a competent artist under the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar, in opaque watercolors and gold on paper. The work is divided into two equal parts; while the upper section depicts an event held under the multi-colored canopy in the tent where Babur sits, the lower part shows the everyday life in the camp with the people serving meals, sentinels equipped with their maces, and a beautifully adorned horse awaiting outside the camp.
