The Portrait of Matilde Juva Branca by Francesco Hayez is considered a masterpiece of the 19th-century, and it belongs to a set of two portraits requested by her husband Giovanni Juva. As an artwork, it is unsettling to analyze, due to the color palette it posses, along with the expression of the subject. Her hands are one of the most important elements in the portrait, specially the way they are represented. Her right hand rests heavily over the fur showcasing luxury and relaxed ease. On the other side, her left bare hand holds the glove to suggest a strong but disciplined life. In this painting, Hayez manages to capture her duality as a performer, due to her immense skill of emotional expression on stage, while holding it back to reality and her conscious.
