Portrait of the Artist’s Mother

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Musée d\'Orsay, Paris, France

"Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" doesn't really attract viewers at first due to its simplicity but it is deeply emotional and powerful. Whistler balances the composition using colour rather than focusing on storytelling. The portrait conveys patience, dignity, and strength. Anna Whistler is the artist's mother, reflecting calm and still posture while seated in a dark clothing. He has used a limited palette using greys and blacks for keeping the attention on her expressions rather than unnecessary details around. There is a Japanese inspired curtain and framed painting highlighting Whistler's artistic interests. I believe this painting is a successful combination of genuine human feelings along with formal art, making it both timeless and iconic.
