The painting shows a moment from the Harivamsa, in which the sage Narada tells Kamsa about the danger around him. The scene is built as a mythological story with many people, elephants and chariots in the space. Of showing just one person the artist makes a lively picture where action, fighting and magic seem to happen all at the same time.
The way the painting is put together shows the style of the Kangra tradition. The people are placed carefully on the picture and the land and moving clouds give a feeling of action and drama. The gold in the painting makes the clothes, decorations and small details shine and this gold stands out against the colors of the land around. The way the people look and the way they move is very important because they show the tension of the meeting without needing any words to explain.
In the middle of the story is the fight between power and the forces that decide what happens. Kamsa is a ruler but he gets a warning that says no matter how powerful he is he can't change what is going to happen. Narada brings in a part of knowledge so the talk is more than just between two people. His warning is part of a story that leads to Krishna meeting Kamsa.
This painting changes a story from a book into a picture that tells a drama. The mix of people fast movement, land, gold decorations and stories, from ancient texts shows how Kangra painters used small paintings not only to show religious stories but to show feelings, excitement and the fact that what is going to happen can't be stopped.
