Allegorical Figure of Fame is a drawing made by Cavaliere d'Arpino who is also known as Giuseppe Cesari at around 1590, and it is now kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This is not just a quick sketch but a fully finished drawing that Cesari made. It is seen as a complete work on its own. It shows the personification of Fame and it is made using graphite and red chalk with white gouache added to highlight certain areas. This combination of red and black chalk was something Cesari was especially known for among the artists of his time. The surface of the drawing has become a bit rubbed over the years but the careful and controlled way it was drawn is still very visible today.
What makes this drawing really interesting is what happened to it later on. In 1987, a scholar named Lawrence Turčić noticed that this same design was reused by Cesari many years later as the basis for a large fresco he painted between 1613 and 1615 on the ceiling of the Palazzina Montalto which is inside the gardens of the Villa Lante at Bagnaia near Viterbo. Later research done by Marco Simone Bolzoni in 2013 looked into this even more closely and confirmed that Cesari had originally made this drawing on its own in the 1590s and only came back to reuse and expand it more than twenty years later for this much bigger ceiling project. This shows how Cesari's earlier independent designs sometimes became the foundation for major commissions much later in his career and it gives us a good look into how he worked over time.
The softness of the chalk combined with the gouache creates a very ethereal form for the humanization of Fame. It also conveys how fame is often a fickle, quick-changing, and flowing figure in one's hands, slipping through our grasp very easily.
