Allegoria di un regno (Allegory of a Reign), painted by the Italian Baroque master Francesco Solimena in 1690, is an allegorical oil painting that celebrates the ideals of political authority, justice, and virtuous leadership. The composition is carefully organized around a large oval medallion containing the portrait of the ruler, which occupies the visual center of the painting. This medallion is surrounded by mythological and allegorical figures that symbolize the qualities expected of an ideal sovereign. Rather than depicting a historical event, Solimena uses classical symbolism to communicate the legitimacy and glory of a ruler through personifications of wisdom, victory, history, and divine approval. A female figure wearing a laurel wreath, commonly identified as Minerva (the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare), stands confidently while holding symbols of authority and virtue. Nearby lies an older male figure associated with Chronos (Time), whose presence suggests that the greatness of the ruler will endure through history. Above them, winged putti and allegorical beings carry trumpets, wreaths, and other emblems celebrating the ruler's achievements.
