"The Akbar Receiving News of the Victory at Gogunda, from an Akbarnama" by Manohar, painted sometime between c. 1596 and 1600 AD, is a masterclass of a miniature painting in the Mughal era, where symbolism and minimalism meet imperial magnificence. Painted from the imperial Akbarnama manuscript, done in opaque watercolours, ink, and gold on paper, the work delineates one of the key events in the period of Emperor Akbar's reign. The Mughal victory in Gogunda in 1576 (connected with the Battle of Haldighati), as described by Abul Fazl's court chronicle under the patronage of Akbar, was a part of a wider approach of aggrandizing his image and achieving legitimacy via imagery.
The painting reflects the cosmopolitan spirit and syncretic culture of the time, as it depicts petitioners, nobles of the Mughal Empire and even a European guest, demonstrating diplomacy and socio-religious diversity. Stylistically, it keeps the Persian traditions and Indian sensibilities of that time embedded in its details. The varied colour combinations utilised by the painter to shape how one views the landscape, different people from different walks of life shown to be occupying the space below the emperor, the presence of a horse (as a sign of mobility and warfare) and the structures engulfing the royal space effectively illustrate the defining moment.
The painting follows the technique of the Mughal atelier, where the application of opaque pigments (gouache-like watercolours) and fine ink outlines the limited use of gold for textiles, architecture, and regalia. Manohar (1582-1624), presenting a faithful reflection of his times, is known for the vividly patterned surfaces and penchant for decorative motifs instead of illusion of space, providing a picturesque tapestry-like look of the court scene.
In one of her articles, Sylvia Houghteling recreates Mughal court dress through the prism of "humbler" but valued fabrics—Rajasthani tie-dyes and Bengali muslins—prized for their sensory features such as softness and coolness. In relation to the concerned painting, it helps to see not only Akbar's dress as the symbol of sovereignty but also carefully chosen fabric expressing refinement and political message via textures and drape.
Intrinsically, Akbar is depicted as the king seated in royal isolation, listening to one of his nobles reciting the message of victory on a scroll. The depiction portrays the emperor as a benign and just king and that even his inability to read is overcome by the supremacy of the written word. In this way, the painting serves as a celebration of Manohar’s artistic talent in that it exalts the majesty of the empire and the concept of order, while at the same time demonstrating the inclusive policies of the emperor.
While there's a shared sense of visibility among everybody present, there's also a message of accessibility that the emperor subtly conveys by being present among them. As this humanizes the emperor, the real distinction is where the painting truly excels. How the emperor is seated on an elevated platform, to project authority and infallibility, is the hallmark of Manohar's craft.
I interpret this artwork as a visual representation of Mughal imperial power. It combines history with political messaging: the victory at Gogunda is important, but the real focus is Akbar himself—his authority, stability, wealth, and ability to bring different people together under his rule. For me, the painting shows how Mughal miniature art could function not only as storytelling, but also as a way of creating and strengthening the image of a powerful emperor.
