Perigo del Vaga, also known as Piero Bonaccorsi or Perin del Vaga was born on 1547 near Florence, Italy. He was an Italian painter of late Renaissance period and draughtsman, known for his vitality and elegance in painting. He played an important role in bridging the Roman Raphaelesque tradition and the first Florentine mannerism. He was also a fresco master as he painted large, beautiful decorations for the Vatican and Castle Sant'Angelo in Genoa.
Perigo painted, "Adoration of the Shepherds" between 1530-1535, it shows the influence of Roman high Renaissance style as it looks harmonious and balanced but it also shows the early signs of Mannerism, especially the curious instability in Virgin Mary's pose. A traditional iconography depicts Virgin Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus surrounded by angels and shepherds. Another unusual detail is that a shepherd gives Jesus a tied lamb, and places it at the feet of the Christ child, this represents Christ as the sacrificial Lamb of God. This depiction strenthening the artworks's central gesture, an angel offers a small cross to the Christ child, who reaches for it purposefully, suggesting both awareness of the Passion and understanding of its importance that seems beyond his age. At the right side, a shepherd notices two men driving an ox and an ass before them, the shepherd looks upward at a calf slung over one of the man's shoulder, the other man beats the ass. The scene is set in a rustic stable, characterized by rich, earthly hues.
The Adoration of the Shepherds communicates that true greatness is found in humility. By revealing Christ's birth first to shepherds, members of one of the lowest social classes, the painting emphasizes that divine grace transcends wealth, power, and social status. The contrast between the humble stable and the miraculous event reinforces the Christian message that God enters the ordinary world to bring hope and salvation.
